The esophageal epithelial luminal surface is the innermost lining of the esophagus, primarily composed of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium that serves as a critical physical and chemical barrier (StatPearls, 2023). This surface protects underlying tissues from mechanical trauma during swallowing and from chemical injury caused by refluxed gastric acid and pepsin (PubMed, PMID: 24533239).
