Overview

The esophageal mucosa is the innermost lining of the esophagus, playing a critical role in protecting the organ from mechanical and chemical damage as food and liquids pass from the pharynx to the stomach. It acts as a barrier against abrasive effects, acidic refluxate, pathogens, and other environmental insults. The mucosa consists of non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium, lamina propria (loose fibrovascular connective tissue), and muscularis mucosae (thin sheet of smooth muscle). Its integrity is maintained by tight junctions, adherens junctions, and desmosomes.
