In diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), this barrier is often compromised, leading to increased permeability and chronic inflammation (NIH, 2022). While not a specific molecular target like a receptor or enzyme, the esophageal mucosal surface is the site of action for various topical therapies, including viscous budesonide and mucosal protectants like sucralfate, which aim to restore the epithelial barrier or suppress local immune responses (PubMed, 2021). Understanding the physiological properties of this surface is essential for developing effective drug delivery systems that can withstand the clearing effects of peristalsis and saliva.
