Overview

Espin-like protein (ESPNL) is a cytoskeletal actin-binding protein closely related to espin, localized primarily in actin-rich structures such as microvilli and stereocilia of sensory cells[5]. Like espin, ESPNL is thought to regulate the organization, stability, and length of actin bundles in specialized filopodial structures, with key roles in mechanosensory cell function, particularly in the inner ear. Mutations in its homolog ESPN are associated with various forms of hereditary hearing loss, underscoring the importance of this protein family in the development and maintenance of hair cell stereocilia necessary for auditory transduction[1][3][5]. There is little evidence to support its consideration as a therapeutic target or receptor, nor are there any known drugs or safety issues associated specifically with ESPNL. Notes: - While *Espin* (ESPN) is well studied, "Espin-like" (ESPNL) is a distinct but less characterized member of the same protein family, often inferred from the biology of espin. - ESPN and ESPNL belong to the broad class of cytoskeletal actin-binding proteins, not known receptors or enzymes. - Espin-like is not a known target for drugs or therapeutic interventions. - If user is searching for classic therapeutic targets (e.g., receptor, enzyme), ESPN and ESPNL do not meet that criterion. - No evidence of use as biomarker or involvement in cancer, inflammation, or common clinical disease pathways except for sensory disorders.
