Essential amino acids are a group of nine amino acids that cannot be synthesized de novo by the human body in sufficient quantities and must therefore be obtained from dietary sources. They play a critical role in stimulating muscle protein synthesis by serving as substrates for new protein formation and activating key anabolic pathways such as mTOR. The presence of all essential amino acids is required to maximize muscle growth and repair; among them, leucine is particularly potent in activating the mTOR pathway. Supplementation with essential amino acids—especially those high in leucine—has been shown to effectively increase rates of muscle protein synthesis after exercise or during periods of increased demand. Deficiency or imbalance can lead to impaired tissue maintenance and loss of lean body mass[1][2][4][5]. Note: "Provides essential amino acids for muscle synthesis" is not itself a molecular target but rather describes a functional requirement or process involving multiple molecules (the nine essential amino acids). Therefore, this entry does not correspond to a single receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other canonical therapeutic target; it refers instead to an entire class of nutrients necessary for normal physiological function.
