Target intelligence / Profile preview
Essential fatty acid (EFA) supply refers to the provision of specific polyunsaturated fatty acids that are vital for normal physiological function but cannot be synthesized by humans or other animals and must therefore be obtained from the diet. The two primary families of EFAs are omega-3 (n−3) and omega-6 (n−6) fatty acids. The parent compound for omega-6 is linoleic acid (LA; 18:2n-6), while alpha-linolenic acid (ALA; 18:3n-3) is the parent for omega-3s. EFAs play several critical roles in human health: Serve as precursors to bioactive lipid mediators, including eicosanoids, endocannabinoids, lipoxins, resolvins, neuroprotectins, and others that regulate inflammation, immunity, mood, cell signaling, and vascular function. Are integral components of phospholipids in cellular membranes—maintaining membrane structure and fluidity throughout the body. Influence gene expression by activating or inhibiting transcription factors such as NF-kB involved in inflammatory responses. Adequate EFA supply is essential for developmental processes such as visual acuity in infants—especially dependent on dietary omega–3s during early life stages. Deficiency can lead to impaired growth/development and various health issues related to skin integrity, immune dysfunctions, neurological deficits etc. Modern diets often have an imbalanced ratio favoring excessive omega–6 over omega–3 intake—a factor implicated in chronic inflammatory diseases. An optimal dietary ratio (~4:1 ω–6/ω–3) supports better cellular health compared to typical Western diets with much higher ratios favoring ω–6s.
