Overview

The essential fatty acids (EFAs) metabolic pathway is a series of biochemical reactions that convert dietary omega-3 (α-linolenic acid, ALA) and omega-6 (linoleic acid, LA) fatty acids into longer-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) like arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These PUFAs and their bioactive metabolites, such as eicosanoids and endocannabinoids, are crucial for cellular function, inflammation regulation, and overall health. Humans cannot synthesize EFAs de novo and must obtain them from their diet.
