Overview

Estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) mRNA is the messenger RNA transcript produced from the ESR1 gene, which encodes the estrogen receptor alpha protein. ERα is a nuclear hormone receptor and functions as a ligand-activated transcription factor that regulates the expression of estrogen-responsive genes. The ESR1 gene undergoes alternative splicing, resulting in several mRNA transcripts that primarily differ in their 5' untranslated regions. Alterations or dysregulation of ESR1/ERα are implicated in various diseases, most notably breast cancer. It's the target for endocrine therapies such as selective estrogen receptor modulators/degraders. Mutations or splice variants can affect responsiveness to therapy or contribute to resistance mechanisms.
