Etching

01

Overview

Etching is not a therapeutic target molecule or receptor; rather, it refers to a group of physical and chemical processes used in fabrication, microscopy, and bioengineering. In medical and biotechnological contexts, the term most commonly describes acid etching in dentistry, where acids such as phosphoric or hydrofluoric acid are used to create microscopic porosities in tooth enamel and dentin to facilitate the bonding of restorative materials. In microfabrication and tissue engineering, etching refers to subtractive manufacturing techniques (e.g., plasma or molecular etching) used to create microfluidic channels, biosensors, or complex micropatterned growth surfaces by selectively removing layers of material or degrading extracellular matrix components. Additionally, freeze-etching is a specialized electron microscopy sample preparation technique that reveals the internal structure of biological membranes by sublimating ice from frozen-fractured specimens. Because etching describes a scientific methodology rather than a molecule, it lacks a canonical biological classification, and there are no therapeutic drugs designed to interact with it as a drug target.
