Overview

Ethanolamine kinase 1 pseudogene (ENSG00000250345; LOC100419356) is a genomic DNA segment which resembles the functional gene "ethanolamine kinase 1" (ETNK1) but has lost its protein-coding ability due to disabling mutations, truncations, or lack of regulatory elements. Pseudogenes are frequently transcribed at low levels, but most are nonfunctional and considered "junk DNA". Although some pseudogenes can produce non-coding RNAs affecting gene regulation, there is no evidence that this particular pseudogene is functional in a regulatory context. Pseudogenes can complicate molecular genetic studies by being mistaken for functional genes or interfering with gene amplification and characterization. In summary, ENSG00000250345 (LOC100419356) is a pseudogene, not a receptor or therapeutic target, and does not participate in canonical molecular classifications, biological functions, disease roles, nor is it involved in drug interactions or biomarker applications

02

Mechanism of action

None. There is no mechanism of action, as no therapies are directed at this pseudogene

03

Biological functions

No direct biological function as it is a nonfunctional, gene-like DNA segmentSome pseudogenes may be transcribed to non-coding RNAs which could potentially regulate gene expression (as competitive endogenous RNAs or through chromatin modification), but this is highly variable and not established for this specific pseudogene
04

Disease associations

Other: Few pseudogenes have been implicated via regulatory RNAs in diseases such as cancer, but their roles are generally indirect, poorly characterized, and there is no evidence for disease association for "ethanolamine kinase 1 pseudogene"
05

Safety considerations

None. This pseudogene poses no therapeutic safety concerns, as it is not targeted in therapy
06

Interacting drugs

None.
07

Biomarkers

None.
