Overview

Ethanolamine metabolism refers to the biochemical pathways by which ethanolamine, a simple amino alcohol, is utilized and transformed within living organisms. Ethanolamine is a naturally occurring compound found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, where it plays critical roles in membrane lipid synthesis and as a nutrient source. In mammals, it's primarily used for phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) synthesis. In bacteria, it can be a major carbon/nitrogen source metabolized via ethanolamine ammonia-lyase. Perturbations in ethanolamine metabolism are linked to gut health and inflammation.
