Eukaryotic Small Ribosomal Subunit (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Ribonucleoprotein, Ribosomal subunit
01

Overview

The 40S ribosomal subunit is the small subunit of the eukaryotic cytoplasmic ribosome, which, together with the large (60S) subunit, forms the functional 80S ribosome responsible for protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells. The primary role of the 40S subunit is to decode messenger RNA (mRNA) by ensuring correct base pairing between mRNA codons and transfer RNA (tRNA) anticodons during translation initiation and elongation. It consists of one molecule of 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and approximately 33 distinct ribosomal proteins.
