Eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1 alpha 1 (EEF1A1) is an isoform of the alpha subunit of the eukaryotic elongation factor 1 (eEF1) complex, which delivers aminoacyl-tRNAs to the A-site of the ribosome in a GTP-dependent manner during the elongation phase of protein synthesis. It is ubiquitously expressed in tissues such as brain, placenta, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas, and also has non-canonical roles including actin bundling for cytoskeleton organization, regulation of heat shock response (HSR) by activating HSP70 transcription via HSF1 recruitment, mRNA stabilization and nuclear export, promotion of IFNG transcription in T cells, and facilitation of viral protein translation (e.g., SARS-CoV-2). EEF1A1 is distinct from the paralog EEF1A2, with tissue-specific expression and structural differences; it is identified as an autoantigen in Felty syndrome and implicated in cancer and neurodegeneration.
