Overview

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 1 (EIF1) is a universally conserved small protein essential for translation initiation in eukaryotic cells[1][2][4][5]. EIF1 binds to the 40S ribosomal subunit as part of the 43S preinitiation complex, cooperating with several other initiation factors to maintain the fidelity of start codon selection and to promote the scanning of mRNA[1][3]. It enables the ribosome to reject incorrect codon-anticodon pairings, thus ensuring accurate translation initiation at the start codon[1][3][5]. EIF1 interacts with the p110 subunit of the eukaryotic initiation factor 3 (eIF3), facilitating its recruitment to the ribosome[4][5]. It does not act as a typical drug target (such as an enzyme or receptor) and is not known to be directly involved in pathology or targeted by drugs, but is critical for proper cell function due to its central role in protein synthesis[1][3][4].\n\nNote: \nThe alias \"EIF1A\" refers to a related but distinct initiation factor (EIF1A); the above information is specific to \"EIF1\" (eIF1)[1].
