Overview

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 1A Y-linked (EIF1AY) is a protein-coding gene located on the non-recombining region of the Y chromosome. EIF1AY encodes a Y-chromosome–specific isoform of the highly conserved eukaryotic translation initiation factor 1A, which is essential for the initiation of protein synthesis by aiding in the binding of the initiator methionine-tRNA to the 40S ribosomal subunit and scanning for the start codon. The protein is a component of the 43S pre-initiation complex, facilitates scanning and start codon recognition, and promotes assembly of the 80S ribosome at the initiation codon. EIF1AY is predominantly expressed in the testis and is considered critical for normal spermatogenesis. Loss or decreased expression of EIF1AY has been implicated in male infertility, particularly non-obstructive azoospermia and spermatogenic maturation arrest. There are no known therapeutic drugs directly targeting EIF1AY, and its primary role is in normal cell physiology rather than as a pharmacologic target[1][2][3][4][5].
