Interferon-induced protein kinase R (PKR), also known as EIF2AK2, is a serine/threonine protein kinase activated by double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). It plays a crucial role in antiviral defense by inhibiting protein synthesis and inducing apoptosis in infected cells. PKR activation also triggers signaling pathways that modulate inflammation and immune responses. While primarily known for its antiviral functions, PKR is also implicated in cancer, metabolic disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting its diverse roles in cellular stress responses and disease pathogenesis.
