Overview

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit alpha (eIF-2α) is a critical regulatory component of the eIF2 heterotrimeric complex, which plays an essential role in the initiation phase of protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells. The α-subunit serves as the main regulatory site for phosphorylation events that control global protein synthesis rates in response to various cellular stresses. Phosphorylation status on serine residue S51 determines whether cells globally suppress new protein synthesis while selectively translating key adaptive genes—a process central both for normal physiology under fluctuating environments and disease states involving chronic cellular stress.
