Overview

EIF3KP1 stands for *Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit K pseudogene 1* and is a human gene classified as a pseudogene[2][3]. Pseudogenes are genomic DNA sequences similar to normal genes but are non-functional; they often arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and generally do not encode functional proteins. EIF3KP1 is related by sequence to EIF3K, a subunit of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3) complex. Unlike functional members of the eIF3 complex, which are central to mRNA translation initiation and cellular growth regulation[1], EIF3KP1* itself is non-coding and appears not to produce a functional protein product nor to play a direct role in cellular biological functions, disease, or pharmacology[2][3]. There is currently no validated disease association or therapeutic relevance reported for this pseudogene. Key context: EIF3KP1 is a pseudogene, not a functional protein-coding gene, and should not be confused with EIF3K, which is a legitimate eukaryotic translation initiation factor subunit with biological activity and relevance to processes such as translation regulation and tumor biology[1]. As a pseudogene, EIF3KP1 does not serve as a traditional drug target, biomarker, or active participant in disease.
