Overview

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit L (EIF3L) is a component of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3) complex, a multi-protein assembly essential for the initiation of protein synthesis in eukaryotic cells[1][2]. EIF3L binds RNA and helps coordinate the assembly of the 43S pre-initiation complex, facilitating the recruitment and scanning of mRNA as well as other functions necessary for translation initiation[1][2]. It is involved in regulating the translation of specific subsets of mRNAs, impacting cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis[1][3]. Recent evidence suggests EIF3L may have additional roles in translational repression and mRNA cap-binding, though its specific mechanistic contributions are still being elucidated[3]. Genetic or functional disruption of EIF3L or associated eIF3 complex members has been associated with certain cancers and a rare bone dysplasia[1][3]. There are currently no known therapeutic agents that specifically target EIF3L, nor is it established as a direct biomarker or drug target[1][3].
