eIF4E (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E) is a highly conserved, essential protein in eukaryotes that plays a central role in the initiation of mRNA translation. It is best known as the cap-binding protein that recognizes and binds to the 7-methylguanosine cap structure at the 5' end of most eukaryotic mRNAs. Overexpression or dysregulation leads to increased translation of specific oncogenic mRNAs ("eIF4E-sensitive elements"), contributing to malignant transformation and cancer progression.
