Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E family member 2 (EIF4E2)

Target
EIF4E2
Molecular classification
Translation initiation factor, Cap-binding protein
01

Overview

EIF4E2, also called eIF4E-homologous protein (4EHP), is a member of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E family. It binds the 7-methylguanosine cap of mRNA and acts primarily as a repressor of translation initiation. Unlike canonical eIF4E, EIF4E2 does not bind eIF4G, thereby inhibiting assembly of the eIF4F complex and blocking cap-dependent translation. It participates in RNA silencing pathways, regulates the translation of certain stress- and interferon-responsive genes, and is involved in the response to viral infection by controlling innate immune responses. EIF4E2 is not a widely accepted drug target, nor is it a pseudogene as implied by the original query.
