Overview

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A-1-like (EIF5AL1) is a protein coding gene product that functions as a translation factor, promoting translation elongation and termination, especially in situations where ribosomes stall at specific amino acid sequences (such as polyproline stretches). EIF5AL1 binds between the exit (E) and peptidyl (P) sites of the ribosome, acting to rescue stalled ribosomes and is important for ribosome quality control, particularly during the CAT tailing step. Additional suggested roles include involvement in actin dynamics, cell cycle progression, mRNA decay, cellular stress responses, and potentially cell wall maintenance. Disorders linked to variations in EIF5AL1 include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and certain hereditary motor neuronopathies. EIF5AL1 is not currently a well-established direct therapeutic target, and no known interacting drugs or associated biomarkers or notable safety concerns have been documented[1][3][4].
