Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 5A pseudogene 3 (EIF5AP3) is a pseudogene, meaning it is a genomic DNA sequence similar to the functional EIF5A gene but does not encode a functional protein due to accumulated mutations or lack of regulatory elements[3]. Pseudogenes usually arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and are largely non-functional. While pseudogene transcripts can sometimes regulate the expression of their parent genes or other genes by means of competing endogenous RNA activity, EIF5AP3 is not recognized as having independent biological or therapeutic significance. The functional gene EIF5A, by contrast, encodes a unique translation factor involved in ribosome rescue and post-translational hypusination, but these activities do not extend to EIF5AP3[1][2][4].
