Eukaryotic translation termination factor 1 pseudogene 1 (ETF1P1) is a human pseudogene related to eukaryotic translation termination factor 1 (ETF1), which is an essential class-1 polypeptide chain release factor responsible for translation termination at stop codons. ETF1P1 itself does not encode for a functional protein. Like many pseudogenes, ETF1P1 is considered a nonfunctional relic of a protein-coding gene. Although some pseudogenes have emerging regulatory roles in gene expression (e.g., through acting as microRNA sponges or by generating regulatory noncoding RNAs), there is no direct evidence that ETF1P1 has any such functional impact. Its aliases include HCGVII and SUP45L2. ETF1P1 should not be confused with ETF1 (eukaryotic translation termination factor 1), which is a functional gene and an essential component of translation termination machinery.
