Excipient action

Excipients are substances formulated alongside the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) of a medication, typically classified as "inactive" or non-therapeutic components[1][2][3][4][5][6]. They serve essential roles in drug formulations, such as improving stability, bioavailability, manufacturability, taste, or appearance, and facilitating appropriate drug delivery. Excipients include classes such as fillers, binders, disintegrants, lubricants, preservatives, solubilizers, and coloring/flavoring agents. While traditionally considered inert, some excipients can influence the pharmacokinetics or tolerability of the drug product, and their selection is closely regulated to ensure safety and efficacy. "Excipient action" per se does not refer to a molecular entity but to these functional supportive roles in pharmaceutical science.
