Overview

EXOC1 antisense RNA 1 (EXOC1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the antisense strand of the EXOC1 locus. Like other antisense RNAs, EXOC1-AS1 does not encode a protein but is thought to regulate the expression of its sense gene (EXOC1) or other genes through diverse post-transcriptional mechanisms. Antisense RNAs are implicated in complex regulatory processes such as chromatin modification, transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene silencing, alternative splicing, and stabilization or degradation of target RNAs. Although the biological and disease roles of EXOC1-AS1 specifically are not well characterized in available sources, the class of antisense RNAs is known to play significant roles in gene expression regulation and is often deregulated in cancer and other diseases. EXOC1-AS1 is not considered a direct therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme), and there are currently no known drugs or biomarkers associated with it.
