Overview

Exocyst complex component 2 is a protein encoded by the EXOC2 gene in humans. It is a constituent of the exocyst complex, an evolutionarily conserved hetero-octameric protein complex that is essential for the targeting and tethering of exocytic vesicles to specific docking sites at the plasma membrane. The exocyst complex governs critical processes in polarized vesicle trafficking, cell polarity, and membrane expansion in higher eukaryotes. EXOC2 interacts with the actin cytoskeletal remodeling machinery and the Ral subfamily of GTPases, supporting processes like filopodia formation in fibroblasts and exocytosis. Disruption of EXOC2 function is implicated in impaired cell polarity, migration, ciliogenesis, and certain neurodevelopmental and cancer phenotypes; however, it is not a recognized direct therapeutic target at present[1][2][3][4][5][6].
