Overview

Exocyst complex component 5 (EXOC5) is a core subunit of the exocyst complex, an evolutionarily conserved, octameric protein complex essential for targeting and tethering exocytic vesicles to specific sites on the plasma membrane prior to membrane fusion[2][5][3]. In mammals, this complex plays critical roles in processes requiring polarized exocytosis, such as epithelial cell surface formation, neuronal outgrowth, and maintenance of cell polarity[2][3]. EXOC5 interacts with other exocyst subunits and associates with actin cytoskeletal components to regulate vesicle trafficking. Dysfunction of EXOC5 has been linked to renal ciliopathies and other diseases associated with defects in vesicle targeting and cell polarity[2]. No drugs are currently reported to directly interact with EXOC5, and it is not a classic therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme), but it is considered a vital component of intracellular trafficking and polarity-setting machinery.
