Overview

Exocyst complex component 6 (EXOC6) is a protein encoded by the EXOC6 gene in humans and is a critical part of the exocyst complex, a conserved eight-subunit protein complex required for targeting and tethering vesicles to the plasma membrane during exocytosis. EXOC6 is highly homologous to the yeast SEC15 protein, essential for vesicular trafficking from the Golgi apparatus to the cell surface. In humans, it plays important roles in the docking of secretory vesicles with fusion sites at the cell surface. EXOC6’s function is crucial for processes such as the establishment of cell polarity and formation of the apical membrane during epithelial tissue development. Mutations or deletions affecting EXOC6 are implicated in diseases such as nonsyndromic optic nerve aplasia and have been associated with syndromes affecting organ development and function[1][3][4][5][10]. Note: No currently approved drugs target EXOC6 directly, and it is not considered a typical drug target (such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter) but rather a part of a cytosolic vesicle tethering complex essential for basic cellular function.
