Overview

Exocyst complex component 8 pseudogene" is a non-functional genomic DNA sequence derived from the exocyst complex component 8 (EXOC8) gene. Pseudogenes such as this are typically the result of gene duplication or retrotransposition events followed by mutations that result in loss of protein-coding function. Unlike its parental gene (EXOC8), which encodes a key protein of the exocyst complex involved in vesicular trafficking and exocytosis, this pseudogene does not produce a functional protein and is not known to have any direct biological activity, therapeutic relevance, or role in disease. In general, most pseudogenes are considered "genomic fossils," although a minority may acquire regulatory functions; as of now, there is no direct evidence that the exocyst complex component 8 pseudogene has such a function.
