Exogenous toxins are a broad and heterogeneous class of substances originating outside the organism that cause harm upon entry into the body (StatPearls, 2023). This category includes biological toxins such as those produced by bacteria (e.g., botulinum toxin), fungi (e.g., aflatoxin), plants (e.g., ricin), and animals (e.g., snake venom), as well as non-biological chemical agents like heavy metals and environmental pollutants (NIH, 2022). These substances exert their effects by binding to specific host receptors, inhibiting vital enzymes, or disrupting cellular membranes, leading to a wide range of pathological conditions from acute poisoning to chronic organ damage (PubChem, 2024). In pharmacology, exogenous toxins are typically the targets of neutralizing therapies such as antitoxins, antivenoms, and chelating agents, which aim to sequester or chemically modify the toxin to prevent its interaction with host tissues (Wikipedia, 2024). Because the term refers to a functional category of diverse molecules rather than a single molecular entity, it is not considered a specific therapeutic target in standard drug discovery nomenclature.
