Overview

Exoglucanase is an enzyme (EC 3.2.1.91), classed as a glycoside hydrolase, that hydrolyzes non-reducing ends of crystalline cellulose polymers, releasing cellobiose or glucose. Xylanase (endo-1,4-β-xylanase, EC 3.2.1.8) is another glycoside hydrolase, specialized in breaking down the β-1,4-xylosidic bonds of xylan, the major component of hemicellulose. Both enzymes are crucial for the degradation of plant cell walls and are commonly co-produced by bacteria and fungi, acting synergistically to convert biomass into fermentable sugars. They are widely used in biofuel production, animal feed, food processing (improving dough properties), and the paper industry. While not classic therapeutic targets, they are industrially and biotechnologically important, and their activity is a determinant of the efficiency of lignocellulosic bioprocessing. Mechanism of action

Exoglucanase: Cleaves glucose units from the non-reducing ends of crystalline cellulose, producing cellobiose or glucose. Xylanase: Hydrolyzes β-1,4-xylosidic linkages in xylan to produce oligosaccharides. Synergistic action with endoglucanases and β-glucosidases for efficient plant biomass degradation.
