Exoribonucleases are a class of ribonuclease enzymes that degrade RNA molecules by removing terminal nucleotides from either the 5' end or the 3' end of an RNA strand. They play essential roles in RNA metabolism, including quality control, degradation, processing, and maturation of various types of RNAs such as messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and microRNAs. They are found in all domains of life—bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes—and can exist as single proteins or as part of multi-protein complexes like the exosome complex in eukaryotes.
