Overview

Exosome-mediated intercellular signaling is a complex, physiological and pathological process in which exosomes, 30–150 nm extracellular vesicles derived from the endosomal compartment, facilitate cell-to-cell communication by transferring proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids (including mRNA, miRNA, and DNA) from donor to recipient cells. Exosome biogenesis involves the formation of multivesicular bodies, and exosome release occurs following fusion with the plasma membrane. Exosomes are implicated in regulating immune responses, carrying tumor markers, modulating gene expression, and contributing to the tumor microenvironment, inflammation, and other diseases. Because "exosome-mediated signaling" refers to an overall communication mechanism involving many molecular and cellular components, it is not a discrete molecular target.
