Overview

Exportin for tRNA pseudogene 1 (XPOTP1) is classified as a pseudogene in the human genome. It is a derivative of functional genes encoding exportin proteins that actively mediate the nuclear export of tRNAs—a process essential for cell biology—but XPOTP1 itself lacks evidence for expression of a functional protein or a relevant biological role. Pseudogenes like XPOTP1 generally arise from duplication or retrotransposition events, resulting in DNA segments that resemble active genes but are typically rendered nonfunctional by disabling mutations. As such, XPOTP1 should not be considered a druggable target, receptor, transporter, or enzyme. It is best regarded as a genetic artifact with no known therapeutic relevance, interaction with drugs, disease association, or clinically relevant biomarker usage. Exportin family members such as XPOT (Exportin-t) and XPO5 are responsible for the nuclear export of tRNAs and pre-miRNAs, respectively. XPOTP1 is sometimes conflated with functional exportins due to name similarity, but bioinformatics and gene databases clarify its status as a pseudogene. Sequence and alias overlap can cause confusion; XPOTP1 shares some aliases with active exportin genes but is not itself a protein-coding gene. XPOTP1 is a non-coding pseudogene with no canonical protein product, functional activity, or drug-target properties—its inclusion in research or drug discovery pipelines should be avoided except as a negative control or reference for pseudogene studies.
