Overview

Expressive language refers to the ability to convey thoughts, feelings, ideas, and needs through speech, writing, gestures, or other communicative forms, distinct from receptive language which involves understanding input. It encompasses key components such as vocabulary selection, grammar and syntax for sentence formation, pragmatics for socially appropriate use, articulation for clear sound production, and fluency for smooth delivery. Brain regions like Broca’s area in the left frontal lobe, primary motor cortex, Exner’s area, arcuate fasciculus, basal ganglia, cerebellum, prefrontal cortex, inferior frontal gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, and angular gyrus support these processes, with damage potentially causing disorders like Broca’s or conduction aphasia. Impairments manifest as limited vocabulary, short sentences, difficulty retelling stories, or reliance on gestures, often seen in children with developmental delays or neurodivergent individuals, impacting social interactions, learning, and daily functioning. While not a molecular target like receptors or enzymes, expressive language deficits are addressed through speech-language pathology therapies that are play-based, individualized, and supportive of bilingual or AAC-using populations, focusing on bridging receptive-expressive gaps without pharmacological intervention.
