Overview

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases are bacterial enzymes that confer resistance to a broad range of beta-lactam antibiotics, including third-generation cephalosporins and monobactams. They are primarily produced by Gram-negative bacteria, particularly members of the Enterobacteriaceae family such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species[5][7]. ESBLs represent a significant clinical challenge as they limit treatment options and are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The genes encoding ESBLs are often located on plasmids, facilitating their spread between bacteria. Treatment of infections caused by ESBL-producing organisms typically requires carbapenems, but resistance to these antibiotics is also emerging, further complicating therapeutic management.
