Overview

EXTL3 antisense RNA 1 (EXTL3-AS1), also known as C8orf50, is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) gene located on chromosome 8, transcribed antisense to the EXTL3 gene[3]. It does not encode a protein and its molecular functions are not well characterized, but as with other lncRNAs, it may play a regulatory role in gene expression, potentially acting through interactions with other RNAs or chromatin. There is currently no evidence to suggest EXTL3-AS1 serves as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other direct therapeutic target, nor is it directly associated with disease states or drug interactions[3][6]. Context and clarification: - Although EXTL3-AS1 is frequently found in gene and expression profiling datasets as a non-coding RNA of interest, there are no data validating it as a receptor, enzyme, or any classical molecular target[3][6]. - It should not be confused with the protein-coding gene EXTL3, which encodes Exostosin-like glycosyltransferase 3, a glycosyltransferase involved in heparan sulfate biosynthesis and is associated with skeletal and immunological disorders[2][5].
