Overview

Extracellular collagen scaffold refers to a biomaterial or engineered structural matrix composed primarily of collagen, the most abundant protein in extracellular matrix. It provides three-dimensional support for cells, regulates cell behavior, and guides tissue regeneration by facilitating cell migration, adhesion, and differentiation. The collagen fibers within the scaffold are architecturally organized to mimic the native tissue’s mechanical properties[1][2][4][5][6]. Decellularized extracellular matrix scaffolds (often derived from animal tissues) promote host cell infiltration, modulate immune responses by favoring anti-inflammatory pathways, and support constructive remodeling for tissue repair. Such scaffolds do not function as classic drug targets (receptors, enzymes) but play an essential role in regenerative medicine, wound healing, and some pathological processes like fibrosis and cancer invasion[1][2][5][3].
