Target intelligence / Profile preview

Extracellular DNA in Airway Secretions (DNA)

Target
DNA
Molecular classification
Nucleic Acid, DNA
01

Overview

Extracellular DNA present within airway secretions originating from host cells (neutrophils, epithelial cells) and microorganisms. Elevated levels contribute to increased viscosity and elasticity of mucus, impairing mucociliary clearance and promoting inflammation and infection. It is a therapeutic target for mucolytic agents such as dornase alfa.
