Target intelligence / Profile preview
The extracellular fluid (ECF) compartment refers to all body fluids located outside the cells of multicellular organisms. It comprises the interstitial fluid (IF) surrounding tissue cells, plasma within blood vessels, transcellular fluid (e.g., cerebrospinal fluid, synovial fluid), and lymph. The ECF facilitates nutrient, gas, and waste exchange between blood and cells, maintains electrolyte balance, regulates pH, and ensures proper volume status. Disruptions can lead to clinical conditions such as dehydration/overhydration or electrolyte disturbances.
