The extracellular matrix (ECM) and dermal tissue microenvironment represent the complex structural and functional network surrounding cells in the skin's dermis (StatPearls, NBK441922). It is composed of fibrous proteins like collagen and elastin, as well as glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans that provide mechanical strength and hydration (PubMed, 28435139). Beyond structural support, this microenvironment acts as a reservoir for growth factors and a scaffold for cell signaling, influencing cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation (PubMed, 30110464). In disease states, such as fibrosis or cancer, the ECM undergoes remodeling that can promote pathological progression or resistance to therapy (PubMed, 24603150). While not a single molecular target, various components within this environment are targeted by dermatological and aesthetic treatments to address aging, scarring, and wound repair (PubChem, CID 5282371). For instance, collagenase is used to break down excessive collagen in fibrotic conditions, while retinoids are employed to stimulate matrix production in aging skin (PubMed, 10633670).
