Overview

The extracellular matrix (ECM) and wound-bed cells represent the complex biological environment where tissue repair and regeneration take place. The ECM is a non-cellular three-dimensional network composed of proteins like collagen and elastin, as well as glycosaminoglycans, which provide structural integrity and biochemical cues to resident cells (NCBI, 2023). Wound-bed cells, including fibroblasts, keratinocytes, and various immune cells, respond to these cues to facilitate the stages of wound healing: inflammation, tissue formation, and remodeling (StatPearls, 2023). Pharmacological agents targeting this environment often focus on removing necrotic debris through enzymatic action or promoting cellular growth using recombinant growth factors (FDA, 2014). Because this term describes a multi-component tissue compartment rather than a specific protein or receptor, it is not considered a discrete molecular target in the traditional sense. Instead, it serves as a therapeutic site where multiple molecular interactions are modulated to restore skin integrity (PubMed, 2014).
