The ECM provides essential mechanical support for tissues, determines their physical properties (such as stiffness in bone versus flexibility in cartilage), regulates cellular behavior through biochemical signals, stores growth factors for rapid local release upon demand, mediates cell adhesion via integrins and other receptors on the cell surface, guides migration during development or wound healing processes, influences gene expression through mechanotransduction pathways like durotaxis, participates in immune responses by modulating inflammation after injury or infection—and its dysregulation is implicated in numerous diseases including cancer metastasis and fibrosis. The composition varies between tissues—for example bone is rich in type I collagen while brain ECM contains more hyaluronan—and it constantly remodels itself during development or repair.
