Extracellular matrix (ECM) components and endogenous growth factors represent a complex, multi-component therapeutic target primarily utilized in regenerative medicine and wound healing. The ECM provides the essential physical scaffolding for cells, consisting of proteins like collagen, elastin, and laminin, while endogenous growth factors such as VEGF, TGF-beta, and PDGF provide the biochemical signals necessary for cell recruitment, proliferation, and differentiation (Frantz et al., 2010). Drugs or biological products targeting this system often aim to replace or augment the natural healing environment in tissues where the native matrix is damaged or signaling is impaired (Behm et al., 2012). This approach is commonly seen in the use of decellularized tissues, amniotic membrane extracts, and platelet-rich plasma, which deliver a cocktail of these components to the site of injury. By restoring the structural and signaling integrity of the tissue microenvironment, these therapies facilitate accelerated repair and functional recovery in conditions like chronic ulcers and orthopedic injuries (Fairbairn et al., 2014). This target is considered 'incorrect' in a strict molecular sense because it refers to a broad category of proteins and signaling molecules rather than a single identifiable receptor or enzyme.
These components function by providing a physical scaffold for cellular attachment and migration while simultaneously acting as a reservoir for signaling molecules that trigger regenerative biological pathways such as angiogenesis and re-epithelialization (Schultz & Wysocki, 2009).
