Overview

Extracellular matrix (ECM) components and water represent a composite physiological target primarily discussed in the context of dermatology and cosmeceuticals (Velazquez Pereda et al., 2009). The ECM consists of a complex network of fibrous proteins like collagen and elastin, which provide structural integrity, and glycosaminoglycans like hyaluronic acid, which bind water to maintain tissue volume and hydration (Life Extension, 2013). Water balance within these tissues is further regulated by transmembrane channels known as aquaporins, specifically AQP3 in the skin (MDPI, 2024). Therapeutic agents such as green coffee seed oil and asiaticoside target this system by upregulating the expression of both the structural proteins and the water channels to combat skin aging, photoaging, and dryness (ResearchGate, 2009; SciSpace, 2017). While not a single molecular target, this grouping is used to describe the holistic maintenance of skin health and barrier function (AENSI, 2015).
