Extracellular Matrix Hydration

Molecular classification
Extracellular Matrix Component, Biophysical Property
01

Overview

Extracellular matrix (ECM) hydration refers to the water content and water-retaining properties of the ECM, a complex network of proteins, glycoproteins, and polysaccharides that provides structural and biochemical support to surrounding cells. The ECM is highly hydrated due to the presence of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans, which are strongly hydrophilic molecules that absorb and retain large amounts of water. Proper ECM hydration is essential for mechanical support, diffusion of molecules, and regulation of cellular behavior. Disruption of ECM hydration can have profound effects on organ structure and function.
