Target intelligence / Profile preview
Extracellular matrix protein 1 pseudogene 2 (ECM1P2) is a pseudogene that shares sequence similarity with the functional ECM1 gene but is itself non-coding and does not produce a protein[3]. Pseudogenes like ECM1P2 are often formed through gene duplication or retrotransposition but acquire mutations such as premature stop codons, frameshifts, or truncations that prevent them from encoding functional proteins[5]. Although historically considered "junk DNA," there is increasing evidence that some pseudogenes can play regulatory roles in gene expression—primarily through mechanisms such as acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) that "sponge" microRNAs shared with their functional paralogs, thus indirectly modulating expression of other genes[1][5]. However, there is no published evidence or characterization specifically for ECM1P2 in terms of biological function, disease involvement, or relevance as a therapeutic target or biomarker. ECM1P2 should not be confused with ECM1, the functional extracellular matrix protein 1, which does participate in cell signaling, cancer, and tissue remodeling[4]. By all available peer-reviewed and bioinformatics sources, ECM1P2 is considered a pseudogene and is not a receptor, transporter, enzyme, or direct drug target.
