In biomedical contexts—such as regenerative medicine—decellularized extracellular matrices from animal tissues are used as biologic scaffolds that promote constructive remodeling after implantation by supporting host cell infiltration and new tissue formation. However, this term does not denote a single molecular drug target but rather an entire category of biological structures critical for normal physiology as well as pathological processes like cancer invasion or fibrosis.
