Overview

These proteins provide essential mechanical and chemical signals that govern the transition of satellite cells from quiescence to activation and eventually to differentiation into new muscle fibers (Baghdadi & Tajbakhsh, 2018, PMID: 29431119). Dysregulation of this niche is a hallmark of diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and age-related sarcopenia, where excessive ECM deposition (fibrosis) or loss of structural integrity impairs the regenerative capacity of satellite cells (Mahdy, 2019, PMID: 30704412).
